Wedding Attire - Keep in Mind...

For many, the look and feel of a wedding can center around the attire: the bride's gown, the groom's tuxedo, and the look of the wedding party.  While this may seem like an easy decision many forget to factor in the details.  As you are thinking about "what to wear" and planning your clothing budget, consider the following...

It typically takes twelve to sixteen weeks from the time the manufacturer cuts the fabric until the gown is delivered to the store.

Give the manufacturer a target date that allows ample time for alterations and formal photographs before your wedding day.

If you need extra fabric to cover a headpiece, for special alterations, or to dress a miniature replicas of the bride, is should be ordered at the same time as your gown.

Generally, once an order has been placed, the gown must be purchased, even if your circumstances change.

Many stores require a 50 percent deposit when you order your gown.

It's best to select the headpiece and veil when you select your gown.  (If you must buy at another time, try the veil on with the same style of gown ore one of similar styling to see how it will look.)  Select a headpiece that complements both your gown and your hairstyle.

Consider ordering your headpiece with a detachable veil.  The veil can be removed for the reception, thereby eliminating having your headpiece tugged and pulled by well-wishers.

When gloves are worn, the underseam of the glove's ring finger is slit so that the ring may be placed on your finger.

Wear your engagement ring on the ring finger of your right hand during the ceremony.  Then place it in front of your wedding ring once the ceremony is over.

Any other jewelry should not detract from the overall effect you desire.

White satin, lace, or fine leather shoes are usually worn.  Heel height is a matter of choice.

Because of the length of time you'll need to be wearing your shoes, it's important to carefully break them in before the wedding day.

Your wedding lingerie will be determined by the style of gown you select.  The bridal salesperson should be able to advise you in your choice.

Don't plan your final fitting too early.  With all your involvement in pre-wedding activities, you may find yourself gaining or losing weight.

For the fittings, wear the lingerie and shoes you'll be wearing for your wedding.

If this is your second marriage, there are many beautiful gowns vailable from tea length to the more traditional style.  You may choose white, but a light pastel shade is often chosen.

It is customary for the bride or her mother to make suggestions to the groom's mother about her outfit - the length of dress, length of sleeves, color, and style.

The mothers' dresses should e similar in style and consistent with the style of the wedding (floor-length for formal, floor-length or tea-length for semi-formal, street-length dress or suit for informal).  Colors should complement both the bride's color and each other.

Due to the emphasis placed on the bride, many mothers wait too late to order a dress and often end up with make-do selections.  This is both unnecessary and regrettable because the mothers are in the spotlight too.

A bride who is in the military may choose to wear either her dress uniform or a traditional wedding gown.
