Pre-Trip Tips
The following are a few tips to ensure safe and happy travel to Cabo (from tripadvisor.com and fodors.com, two excellent websites for travel planning): - U.S. and Canadian citizens need only proof of citizenship such as driver’s license (not necessarily a passport) for entry into Mexico.
- Inexpensive airport shuttles run from the airport to Los Cabos. In white and yellow cabs, passengers bargain with drivers over fares (averaging US $10) to Cabo San Lucas. Taxi fares are steep so if you plan to dine at the Corridor hotels or travel frequently between the two towns, consider renting a car. If you do, you must purchase Mexican auto insurance, which you can buy at the U.S.-Mexican border.
- Learning basic Spanish phrases such as “please” and “thank you” will make a big difference in how people respond to you. Things move at a slow pace here and Mexicans are extremely polite, so complaining about delays will brand you as rude and people may be less inclined to help you. Expect to tip the same as you would in the US when it comes to most services.
- Turista (traveler's diarrhea) is caused by consuming contaminated water, fruit or vegetables, so stay away from ice, uncooked food and unpasteurized milk products. Drink only bottled water or water that has been boiled for at least 20 minutes, even when brushing your teeth. When ordering cold drinks, skip the ice. However, ice made from purified water is safe and is identified by its uniform shape and the hole in the center.
- It is wise to bring an electrical adapter as many Mexican outlets have not been updated to accommodate three-prong and polarized plugs.
- ATM transaction fees may be higher abroad than at home but ATM currency-exchange rates are the best. However, most ATMs allow only up to $150 a transaction. Additionally, Many Mexican ATMs cannot accept PINs that have more than four digits; if yours is longer, ask your bank about changing your PIN before you leave home—processing such a change can take a few weeks.
